Corning, a prominent developer of protective glass for mobile devices, has unveiled its latest innovation: Gorilla Glass Ceramic. This new product promises enhanced resistance and durability against drops, utilizing ceramic materials for improved protection. Motorola has already announced its intention to launch at least one smartphone with this advanced glass within the year.

This introduction is not Corning’s first foray into ceramic-based protective glass for Android devices. The Galaxy S25 Ultra features Gorilla Armor 2, which also incorporates ceramic in its design. However, Gorilla Glass Ceramic lacks the anti-reflective properties found in both Gorilla Armor and Gorilla Armor 2.

Despite this, it is likely that both glass types will provide comparable levels of protection. According to Corning, Gorilla Glass Ceramic exhibits superior drop resistance on rough surfaces compared to third-party aluminosilicate protective glasses. Testing has shown that devices equipped with Gorilla Glass Ceramic have successfully endured up to ten repeated drops—from a height of one meter—on a 180-grit sandpaper surface.

Corning claims that competing protective glasses suffered damage during the first drop under similar conditions. Additionally, Gorilla Glass Ceramic is reported to withstand drops from heights of up to 2.2 meters onto a surface resembling concrete. The integration of ceramics seems to significantly enhance its performance against rough surfaces.

This glass is produced by incorporating ceramic nanocrystals through a crystallization process conducted at extremely high temperatures. It’s important to note that ceramic protective glass has been used in iPhones for a while, with Corning supplying the Ceramic Shield crystals featured in Apple devices since 2020. There may have been a temporary exclusivity arrangement between Apple and Corning for these protectors.

While the specific model of Motorola’s upcoming phone using Gorilla Glass Ceramic has yet to be revealed, it is anticipated that it will be a premium device. The Motorola Edge 60 Pro and Ultra are considered strong candidates for this new technology. In the coming weeks, other Android brands may also announce their plans to adopt the Gorilla Glass Ceramic for their devices.
