Google has introduced significant new features for its NotebookLM service, enhancing how users interact with the AI platform. Announced last week, the most notable addition is the ability to generate Mind Maps, which offer a fresh way to engage with notes and source materials.
In addition, Google has implemented a feature that allows users to change the output language of the AI notebook chatbot, broadening its accessibility. The Mind Map feature enables users to visualize their ideas and navigate complex topics more effectively.
According to Google, this functionality transforms key concepts from the user’s research into an interactive visual format. Once you access any notebook, you can quickly create a Mind Map by selecting the appropriate option in the Chat pane.
The Mind Maps are stored within the Notes list and provide a full-screen interface where users can interact with the chat seamlessly. As an example, a biology student working on a thesis about Coral Reef Ecosystem Decline could upload various research papers and instantly see a Mind Map with topics like ‘Ocean Acidification,’ ‘Rising Sea Temperatures,’ ‘Pollution,’ and ‘Overfishing.’
After the Mind Map is created, it is saved in the Studio tab, but users will need an internet connection to access it from different devices. Additionally, being able to print Mind Maps can be especially beneficial for students.
Another notable feature of NotebookLM is the output language selector. Powered by the Gemini 2.0 model, this functionality allows users to choose their preferred output language for study guides, briefing documents, and chat responses.
Users can find this option in the settings menu located in the top-right corner, although reports indicate that this feature may not yet be available to all users of NotebookLM.
